Pressure Washer Nozzles: Choose the Right Spray Pattern

A wider spray is gentler; choose nozzle angle, distance, and flow together for the surface.

Quick answer: Start with a wide nozzle and a safe distance, then test before moving closer. Narrow spray concentrates force and raises damage risk. The color code helps identify angle, but the exact nozzle and machine ratings still matter.

What angle changes

A wide fan spreads water over more area and is useful for rinsing. A narrower fan concentrates cleaning force on a smaller strip. Zero-degree jets are highly aggressive and are unsuitable for many household surfaces. Soap nozzles usually operate at lower pressure; check the washer’s detergent instructions.

Match nozzle to machine

The nozzle orifice must match the washer’s rated flow and pressure. An incorrect orifice can reduce performance or overload components. Use compatible fittings, inspect the nozzle for wear, and never change tips while the trigger is held. Lock the trigger and depressurize as the manual directs.

Prevent damage

On siding, paint, wood, vehicles, and soft stone, test in an inconspicuous spot. Aim along the surface rather than forcing water behind panels or into electrical parts. Wear eye protection and keep bystanders clear. Stop if the surface fibers, coating, or mortar begin to lift.
