Quick answer: For car washing, prioritize controlled pressure, adequate water flow, a wide spray pattern, and distance from the paint. There is no universal safe PSI for every finish or nozzle. Follow the vehicle and washer instructions and test a small inconspicuous area.
Why PSI alone misleads
The force at the panel changes with nozzle angle, distance, and water flow. A narrow jet held close can damage paint, trim, seals, or decals even when the machine’s advertised PSI seems moderate. Never use a zero-degree nozzle on vehicle paint. A wide fan nozzle is a safer starting point when the manufacturer permits pressure washing.
A safer wash sequence
Pre-rinse loose grit, apply a car-safe cleaner, allow its stated dwell time without letting it dry, then rinse from a sensible distance. Keep the spray moving. Avoid directly blasting chips, sensors, electrical connectors, damaged seals, or loose trim. Clean wheels with products suitable for their finish.
What to buy
Look for adjustable output or a suitable nozzle set, stable flow, hose reach, and a foam accessory only if you will use it. Compare usable flow in GPM as well as maximum PSI. Check the manual’s inlet-water requirement; a weak supply can starve the pump and shorten its life.
