MIG Welding for Beginners: First Setup Checks

Before your first weld, match metal, wire, shielding, polarity, power supply, and protective equipment.

Quick answer: A good first MIG setup starts with the metal and its thickness. Choose a compatible wire and shielding method, set the correct polarity, and follow the machine’s starting chart. Practice on scrap of the same material before welding a real joint.

Set up the work safely

Clear combustibles, provide appropriate ventilation, and wear a rated helmet, gloves, flame-resistant clothing, and eye protection. Shield others from the arc. Inspect leads, ground connection, gas cylinder restraint, and power supply. Never weld a sealed container or unknown coated material without a qualified safety procedure.

Match wire and shielding

Solid wire commonly uses shielding gas; self-shielded flux-core wire has different requirements. Check the machine and wire instructions for polarity and gas flow. Clean the joint, clamp to sound metal, and verify the wire feed path. Wind can disrupt gas shielding outdoors.

Tune on scrap first

Use the manufacturer’s settings chart as a starting point, then adjust based on bead shape, penetration, and arc stability. Travel speed and stickout matter as much as knob settings. For structural or safety-critical work, use an approved procedure and qualified welder rather than a practice setup.
